Local Guide by Unit 17 Store

Tucked away in the Morgan Arcade, we’re lucky to be surrounded by some of Cardiff’s best independents — places run by people who care about what they do and make the city what it is. Here’s a few of our favourite spots, all within easy reach of the shop, whether you’re visiting for a day or call the city home.

Shops

Start just a few doors down with Spillers Records, the world’s oldest record shop and still the heartbeat of the Arcade. Whether you’re after something new or a rare reissue, it’s one of those places you can easily lose an hour in.

Over in the Royal Arcade, Overseas Apparel is well worth a visit. Liam runs the whole thing himself, designing and printing his own collections of casual wear and accessories — a great example of local creativity done right.

And if vintage is your thing, head to Knight Vintage in the High Street Arcade. Small but tightly curated, it’s one of those spots that always has something interesting hidden on the rails.

Coffee

Cardiff’s coffee scene is strong, but Uncommon Ground is always a go-to. The team are great, there’s plenty of room to sit and chat, and the coffee never misses.

If you’re more of a batch brew purist, Corner Coffee is the one. The halloumi and bacon ciabatta is a standout, and it’s the kind of place you can start your day or take a quiet mid-morning break.

Food

Barcereto in the city centre does Venetian-style small plates and good drinks in a relaxed, welcoming space — ideal for anything from a quick stop to a slow afternoon. Try one of their Spritz and some cicheti.

For something more intimate, Ty Caws in Castle Arcade is a must for wine and cheese lovers. They’ve got serious knowledge of local produce and pairings, and it’s one of those places that feels instantly special.

And if you want lively tapas, Curado Bar delivers every time. Always busy for good reason — great dishes, great atmosphere. Afterwards, step next door to their vermouth bar to round off the evening. The Secreto iberico a la brasa is a must.

Drinks

When it comes to drinks, there are plenty of good options close by. Scaredy Cats is a favourite — a café-bar with an easy-going energy, good coffee, craft beers and friendly faces.

If you’re after something a little further out, State of Love and Trust near Roath Park Lake has a brilliant wine list and excellent German beers on tap. It’s worth the trip, and there are a couple of great food spots right next door if you stay for dinner. But check out their social media, as they regularly do food pop ups.

Lastly, Nighthawks, opposite the castle, is the kind of wine bar that does everything right — a relaxed spot with great wine, people who know their stuff, and a lovely atmosphere. If you are feeling peckish here their cheese toasties are delicious.
