The machinery may have stopped, but the knowledge remained.
Hiut Denim was founded in 2011 with a clear purpose: to get Cardigan making jeans again. Rather than producing an extensive clothing collection, the company chose to specialise in one product and make it exceptionally well.

The history of jeans manufacturing in Cardigan
For almost 40 years, Cardigan was an important centre of British jeans manufacturing. Generations of local machinists developed the specialist knowledge required to cut, sew and finish denim at scale.
When the town’s original factory closed, it did not simply mean the loss of a building. Decades of accumulated manufacturing knowledge were also placed at risk.
Hiut was created to put that knowledge back to work.
The company now produces its jeans in its own Cardigan factory using skilled makers, industrial machinery and traditional paper patterns. Each pair passes through numerous hands before being checked, finished and signed by its maker.
Hiut refers to its most experienced makers as Grand Masters. Some have spent decades working with denim and understand the small details that affect how a finished pair will fit, feel and age.
This human knowledge remains central to the brand. Denim has weight and tension, machines behave differently and seemingly minor decisions about stitching or alignment can influence the finished jeans.
What does the name Hiut mean?
Hiut combines the ideas of high-end and utility.
That balance explains much of the brand’s appeal. The jeans use carefully selected materials and skilled construction, but they are intended to be worn rather than treated as precious objects.
Hiut jeans are made for everyday life. The denim softens, creases and fades according to how the owner wears it. A new pair is therefore only the starting point.
The owl used by Hiut also has a local connection. The brand began on a farm near Cardigan where owls nested in an old barn. Their patient and watchful nature became a fitting symbol for the care involved in making each pair.
Where are Hiut jeans made?
Hiut jeans are made in the company’s factory in Cardigan, West Wales.
The denim itself comes from specialist mills selected according to the weight, texture and character required. Current fabrics across the wider Hiut range include organic denim woven by ISKO in Turkey and heavier selvedge denim woven by Kuroki in Japan.
Once the denim reaches Wales, it is cut, sewn and finished by Hiut’s makers.

Hiut jeans available at Unit 17
Unit 17’s first Hiut Denim delivery includes two contrasting fits: the men’s Jerald and women’s Edna.
Both are handmade in Cardigan, but their silhouettes are deliberately different. The Jerald is a higher-rise, classic straight jean, while the Edna has a lower rise and wider, more relaxed shape.
Together, they represent two of the most wearable directions in modern denim: a traditional men’s straight leg and a flowing women’s wide fit.
The Jerald: men’s regular straight fit
The Jerald is Hiut’s classic men’s straight-leg jean and the updated version of its earlier Work fit.
It sits higher on the waist and uses a full, straight cut through the leg. There is more room than in a modern slim fit, but the silhouette remains controlled rather than oversized.
The additional space through the thigh makes the Jerald comfortable for everyday wear, while the straight lower leg allows the denim to fall naturally over boots or trainers.
It can be styled with a sweatshirt and trainers, but it also works particularly well with workwear jackets, overshirts, knitwear and heavier footwear.

Organic denim or Japanese selvedge?
Many Hiut fits are produced in more than one type of denim.

Hiut organic denim
Hiut’s core organic denim is generally a 12oz raw denim made from 100% organic cotton and woven by ISKO in Turkey.
At 12oz, it has enough structure to develop character without feeling as heavy as the Japanese selvedge option. Its green-cast indigo gradually changes through wear and washing, creating a softer and more personal finish.
This is a sensible introduction to raw denim for someone who wants to experience the fading process without beginning with an especially heavy fabric.
Hiut Japanese selvedge denim
Hiut’s OG Japanese selvedge is a more substantial 14.5oz denim woven by Kuroki in Japan.
Selvedge denim is made on narrower looms and can be identified by the finished woven edge running along the outseam. Hiut’s version uses a traditional red selvedge line.
The heavier fabric begins with greater structure and takes longer to soften, but it rewards regular wear by developing distinctive creases and fades. Its deep indigo carries a subtle red undertone, giving the colour additional depth.
Choose Japanese selvedge if you want:

The Gwilym
The Gwilym is a mid-rise, slim-straight fit with a closer line through the leg.
It is narrower than the Jerald and tapers slightly between the knee and hem without becoming a skinny jean. It is best suited to someone who prefers a cleaner and more tailored silhouette.
The Benjamin
The Benjamin has a mid rise, additional room through the upper leg and a gentle taper towards the hem.
It provides more room than a slim fit while retaining greater shape than the Jerald. It is a useful middle ground for someone who wants comfort through the thigh without a completely straight lower leg.
The Miles
The Miles is Hiut’s relaxed wide men’s fit.
It has a higher rise, a wide leg and a generous hem opening. The denim falls cleanly and retains movement, making it well suited to customers looking for a deliberately wider silhouette.

The Mari
The Mari is Hiut’s high-rise slim fit.
It has a clean, close line through the leg and a traditional back yoke to shape the fit. It is the closest and most refined silhouette in the current women’s range.
The Aurelia
The Aurelia sits high on the waist and falls into a loose, straight leg.
It is relaxed through the hip and thigh but more structured than the Edna. Choose the Aurelia if you want a defined waist with a clean, wide-straight silhouette.
The Astrid
The Astrid has a mid rise and a softly structured barrel leg.
Rather than falling completely straight, it curves gently through the leg before returning towards the hem. It offers a more contemporary shape without becoming exaggerated.
The Valerie
The Valerie is a high-rise wide-leg jean shaped with darts at the back.
Those darts help define the waist and reduce gaping, making the Valerie particularly useful for customers whose waist is proportionally smaller than their hips.
How should Hiut jeans fit?
The correct fit depends on both the cut and the type of denim.
Raw denim does not initially behave like lightweight stretch jeans. It can feel firm when new and will gradually relax in areas exposed to movement and pressure, particularly around the waist, seat and thighs.
A new pair should feel secure, but you should still be able to sit, move and fasten the waistband comfortably.
Consider the following when trying Hiut jeans:
- Check where the rise naturally places the waistband
- Make sure the pockets and side seams sit correctly
- Assess the thigh as well as the waist
- Consider how much room you want through the knee and hem
- Try the jeans with the footwear you expect to wear
- Remember that raw denim will soften through use
Do not choose an excessively small size purely because you expect the denim to stretch. The fabric may relax, but the fundamental proportions of the fit will remain.
For the Jerald, pay particular attention to the higher rise and room through the thigh. The waistband should sit comfortably without pulling the front pockets open.
With the Edna, consider where you want the lower rise to sit and how the wide leg falls from the hip. The correct size should preserve the relaxed shape without leaving the waistband unsecured.
The most reliable method is to compare your own measurements with the individual garment measurements and try more than one size wherever possible.
Does raw Hiut denim shrink?
Raw denim can shrink when washed, particularly in length.
Hiut accounts for this by adding extra length to many of its raw-denim models. Depending on the particular fit, a pair labelled with a 30-inch leg may measure approximately 31 inches before its first wash.
The amount allowed can vary, so always check the information supplied for the exact model rather than applying one rule to the entire Hiut range.
If the initial length feels slightly generous, do not alter the jeans before checking whether shrinkage allowance has been included.
How should Hiut jeans be washed?
There is no single correct moment to wash raw denim.
Wearing jeans for longer before their first wash can produce more pronounced contrast between areas of wear. Washing them earlier generally creates softer and more even fading.
The right approach depends on whether you want dramatic wear patterns or simply clean, comfortable everyday denim.
When washing raw jeans:
- Check the instructions for the exact fabric.
- Turn the jeans inside out.
- Use a cool and gentle wash.
- Choose a mild detergent.
- Avoid tumble drying.
- Reshape the jeans and allow them to dry naturally.
Denim should still be washed when it becomes dirty or develops an odour. Extending the first-wash period should never come at the expense of hygiene or the condition of the fabric.
Free repairs for life
Hiut jeans are intended to be worn for years rather than replaced at the first sign of damage.
The company offers free repairs for the life of its jeans. Common areas of wear, including the knees, hems, pocket edges and seat, can be returned to the Cardigan factory for attention.
Standard repair work itself is free, although customers currently contribute towards shipping and handling and must reserve an available repair slot.
